2002 TTR 250 Ran Out of Gas Now Won't Start

New to the forum thank goodness I found ya'll. I am new to the dirt bike thing son is 4 and is riding a Razor electric dirt bike, getting a gas one for his 5th bday in July. Dad has always wanted one so this was my excuse to purchase my first dirt bike. I know very litte about these bikes, it ran strong no issues one day while I was letting it warm up in cut off. Ran her out of gas now I can not get it to start. Turns over clicks you hear the starter trying but it just won't fire. Any suggestions. Also by chance anywhere I can download a service manual and owners manual for this bike? Please email me Timetradernc@gmail.com with any suggestions. I will also check forum tonight. You expert riders out there how long does it take before a new rider gets comfortable enough to get aggressive riding. I am 41 and way to freakin old to go all out but I am itching to crank it up a notch without hurting myself.

Hello, Timetradernc, and welcome.

Fancy running out of petrol, cor! biggrin

Fancy not starting after running out of petrol! biggrinbiggrin

Have you replenished the petrol tank. i.e. you have put some in, haven't you? confusedisbelief

What position is the petrol tap in? This diagram shows the various positions:-

Image2.jpg

If you have put petrol in the tank and the fuel tap is correctly positioned then the thing should run. smile

If it doesn't then the next step is to check that petrol is getting to the carburettor.

To do this means pulling the black rubber pipe off the tap and turning the petrol on. If it doesn't flow from the tap then something will be blocking it and it will need clearing out. confuse

To get a service manual for the TTR I would advise you to enter "service manual" into the search option at the top of the page, and checking the previous posts. wink

The length of time it takes before a new rider gets comfortable enough to get aggressive in riding depends on ball sizes. biggrin

Experience is gained by practice and learning from your experiences. Have patience and your confidence will increase - have a ball (or two) and enjoy it. biggrinbiggrin

Thank you for the fast response, I have added gas and tried starting with the fuel switch in On and Reserve positions. It wants to start but it acts/sounds like fuel is not getting to the carb. Now I've run the battery down so its on charger now. I will pull line running from tank and see if fuel comes out. Awsome forum I try and ride several times a week around my house, I have cut a trail and I push things a little more every time I get on it. Just not comfortable yet braking, sliding etc. Thanks again

Simplest way to check the float isn't stuck and that you are getting petrol into the carb is to undo the drain screw at the bottom of the float chamber.

If nothing comes out then tap smartly on the carb body with the handle of a screwdriver or someting similarly harmless and maybe that will free the float if its stuck.
