The challenge with tax discs on dirt bikes is to make them last a year without turning to pulp what with all the water they have to endure from rain, ford crossings, power washing, etc.

The system I have used for many years with great success is to attach then to the LH ("nearside" as required by law) fork leg with good quality clear sticky back plastic.

Although I guess the method is not 100% legal, the disc is clearly visible and readable and I haven't been pulled for it yet.

The following pics shows just how good last year's tax disc is after 15 months on my spare TTR:

First cut out you plastic sheet leaving a minimum of 1/2 inch clearance on the disc. I sometimes round the edges but can't immediately remember why no

Place your tax disc face down on the sticky side of the plastic sheet. Important to get this right!

Clean the fork leg off with a bit of clutch/brake cleaner or similar and fit the disc. I use a hot air gun to warm it up and make sure it is firmly against the fork leg with no gaps to allow water in behind.

I can vouch that your system works, Brian.

I even managed to carefully peel the clear plastic off the fork leg and replace the tax disc with a new one last May. smile

That's certainly one way of doing it wink

I am not sure why they have to be displayed in any case now that all the info is on the DVLA database along with insurance and MOT data confuse

Technically, its not paying for the tax that matters, as even if your tax disc is in your pocket you can be prosecuted for failing to correctly display your tax disc. This falls under the category of offence that only applies if you come across the worlds most anal traffic cop, or, whoever you're dealing with is desperate to 'do' you for something. The only other potential problem is if your ttr is in a pub car park, say, and you're not with the bike they could do you if they were that way out.

I always take a colour copy of the disc and fix that to my bikes. If it gets lost or stolen it costs you to replace it!
Don`t forget that it has to be visible on the nearside.

Seems I am mounting my disc on the wrong fork leg though disbelief

I used marks method on my road bike. Still technically dodgy but worth  it if someone decides to pinch your tax disc.
