Rear shock - Lower Nut & Bolt
Permalink

I've just been inspecting the bike before getting it out for the weekend and noticed a rather worrying fault.....somehow i've lost the rear shock absorber lower nut and the bolt has worked itself halfway back through and is hanging out the other side..

Not good i hear you say! Now my question is can i try and remove the bolt completely and then look to re-position it and fix a new nut on the end or will this be difficult? The top nut and bolt for the shock is still in place so i'm presuming that'll hold everything in place?

Also...does anyone know what size nut i need to get? Do i need a specific part number/nut? Cheers

You haven't lost the nut Neil coz there isn't one. The bolt screws into a thread on the lower shock mount. If it has just worked loose (VERY unusual) then hopefully the threads will still be OK.

It's a high tensile bolt so it should be OK.. Unlikely to be bent.

Looks it from what i can see.....ill try a new bolt in there and we'll see....however getting a new bolt on good friday/easter weekend could be a problem!

Any idea how this could have happened? Should it just work its way loose like this??

I can only think a previous owner forgot to tighten it up after some work or else it just wasn't torqued up correctly.

Hey Neil,

I would be good to check if your sleeves that go inside the swing arm linkage bush that mounts the shocky on are still there.

.................................................................................................................................................................................................................

This has happened to me twice, although the first time it happened it broke the shocky mount cry

The sec time it just rattled loose even though i torqued it perfect no

It seems that the alloy has a habbit of loosening, then it f##s the thread blankstare

The OEM bolt is not long enough to put a nylock nut on the other side cry

I will be buying a high tensile bolt the correct size & fitting a nylock washer so this does not happen again.
