After changing oil, plug (with new double stalk plug), adjusting ,mixture to the 2 turns, the TTR is still breaking down when the revs get up there. I'm getting a lot of soot out of the exhaust (1/2 of my Learner Plate is black!). I'm at 2 minds whether to attack the carby with a rebuild or tackle the electrical system first. Adjusting the mixture has made it easier to kickstart (although this will be fixed on Thursday with a new battery).
Any quick ideas as to which direction I should take?
p.s I'm off on my first ride with the Sth Oz fellas from the ADV forums this Saturday. If I get the old girl fixed I'll post some piccies from the Goolwa Beach run :)

There is a suppressor in the plug cap that can very occasionally give trouble. Worth checking it out.
Have you checked the valve clearances and that the cam chain is OK and under tension?
It is unusual for the electrics to give trouble on the TTR although if you have a flat battery in the system, could the regulator/rectifier be playing up? Best to wait for the new battery to see if that solves the problem.
Have you checked the carb stub? The rubber gets brittle with age (and heat) and can part from the metal if you have had the carb on and off a few times. Also, the rubber can split and let air leak in.
I have also noticed that the top of the cyclone that plumbs back into the air box had broken almost completely off, could this be a factor or is that for emissions?, Davecambo, I was thinking the same thing with the soot issue and have since adjusted as per Cubber and TTrFan's advice. I think I may have to hand this one to someone who is not a dumbass electrican! I will check the rubber tomorrow, thanks guys
