Seized speedo drive (blue bike of course)

I have been given a used unit and the gears are completely seized. I have removed the circlip and tab washer but the gear which slides over the tube will not budge. It is currently bathing in Plus Gas overnight. Amy tips to aid removal?

The worm gear that the cable slides into looks like it has a VERY  small allen key fixing. Is this correct?

I will be ore than interested to see how you get on Mark. I have half a dozen seized speedo units and didn't have much success with the soaking method. I don't think heat can be used coz of the large seal around the unit.

I ran out of ideas and parked them up. I am hoping a fresh mind on the subject might come up with a solution so the very best of luck wink

I know what you mean. Sods law means that the seal on my old unit which has freed up is knackered but the the seal on the seized unit I have been given is good. The seal appears to be pretty much impossible to remove, so I can`t swap seals. I will experiment with a few old techniques and see what transpires.

Got it sussed Brian!!

As mentioned. I left it upside down, full of Plus Gas overnight. You can insert an allen key into the cable hole to wiggle the small cylindrical gear to make sure that isn`t wedging the main gear. You can just fit a set of adjustable spanners into it and tighten them across the two flats that the 3-tab washer normally sits around. If you get them tightened up well you can exert a fair bit of torque on it. Eventually it moved very slightly, breaking the corrosion seal I guess, and after a bit of wiggling it got looser and looser. Once it was turning fairly freely I found it was difficult to drag the thing out with the spanner so I just turned it upside down and gave it a few sharp taps onto a block of wood. Good luck with yours!

I will need to get a new 3-tab washer. What obviously happens is the gears seize but the tab washer of course keeps turning, thus wearing its inside round so it no longer has any effect.

Was about to give up on my seized speedo drive and sure enough after two nights soaking in plus gas and using a 24mm open spanner with a bar for leverage through the other ring end I finally got some movement across the flats. Was a bit cautious about rounding the flats which would make the whole operation pointless but they seem to be made of strong stuff and can take quite a beating. Awaiting one of Brian's tab washers now to finish the job.
