Just bought a GPS

Hi All, just bought a handheld Garmin GPS unit

for $99.00, they are on special and they only have a couple left, I still have to buy some maps for the unit, they cost $229 from a place called OZtopo, extremly detailed maps, download there demo map to get an idea of what you are getting, the detail is amazing, the best you can get for off road and on road

I'll give a detailed report when I get the unit and set it up

Cheers
Steve

Steve, you say you will give a detailed report when you get the unit and set it up...................

That's dependant on whether it gets you back again, or not! biggrin

Road Angel, Garmin and a host of other GPS systems are used around Devon on the green lanes. Some display North up and on others the display is directional. They all seem impressive but none show as much of the terrain as a map can. blankstare

Looking forward to the write up. smile

Cubber, I hadn't thought of that, well if I don't post anymore messages you'll know not to buy that one   confuse

And Dave it seems your out of luck, the link is dead and they are out of stock, thanks for the shonkymaps link.

I tried a couple of torrents but they just don't seem to work, so can't be bothered spending anymore time on them

Easier and better to just buy the maps, you get full support and cheap upgrades

Cheers

Just had a look at Shonkymaps, I'll certainly give them a try first but they only have 1:250,000 map sets, that may be enough for what I want though

BM Steve -the link is dead, but what type of Garmin did you get? The Johnny appleseed store seems to have the best deals so I'm not surprised you picked up a bargain there. I was wondering if the smaller screens work OK on the bike before having a closer look in store - interested in your feedback

the unit is a eTrex Legend HCx, it was replaced by the eTrex vista HCx

The HCx stands for
High sensitivity
Colour screen
x is for Extra memory card, (Should have been a "e" not an "x" biggrin

The difference between the units is I don't get the electronic compass or a barometric pressure reader, yeah the screen is small but if you want a 3" screen for instance you have to pay over $600

The unit is Rugged, waterproof not just water resistant, lasts for 25 hours on 2 AA rechargeable batteries, anyway look them up

Cheers
