I seem to be dribbling oil out from near the starter motor on my white raid model, is there a common failure point somewhere round there? It's not the output shaft seal. There's no severe bang from the sprag clutch when i stop the bike.
Don't want to be the bearer of bad news but if it isn't oil blowing back over the engine from the decompressor oil plug (a common leak point) then you may have to consider that the generator case has cracked around where it slots over the starter pinion.
It could be that the sprag was replaced by the previous owner but the damage had already been done and the crack wasn't noticed.
I'm going to try putting some silicone gasket round the stator wire plug, i'm not all that concerned about a cracked engine casing - I know a bloody good welder who I'm sure would be able to repair it. Do you mean behind the sprag gear?
I am sure I have a pic of a cracked one but darned if I can find it! Its the area behind the cover - the three bolt one with YAMAHA on that covers the starter pinion and gears. You may be able to see by removing the cover and gear.
Just an update on this, I took the genny cover off on saturday, noted that the gasket was sitting slight off skew and wasn't between the mating faces round the starter gears, a quick wipe of instant gasket appears to have fixed the leak!
While I was at it, I checked for loose bolts - 2 of the engine mounting bolts were loose, and all of the sump guard mountings were loose - seemingly they were like that when I bought it - now I've tightened them all up, and the bike is brilliant - no vibration and no dodgy clattering noises! It survived 30miles of hard greenlaning on Sunday with not a drop of oil loss :D
