New headlight bulb but bit tempromental.... Advice???

Hi guys and Happy new year

Got an hour today so thought I would change my headlight bulb for a better one, problem is when I turn the bulb in the holder all the way it doesnt come on so I turned it back a bit and it comes on!!!! Why????

If I turn it back slightly it comes on but then if I go over a bump it goes out!!!! Cant understand why it wont stay on when fully inserted into plastic holder as connectors are making contact etc.

Could the problem lie elsewhere e.g. in the connector or its feed wires?

Was it a problem with the old bulb?

Hi Brian

old bulb was crap so bought a xenon whateva one, supposed to be much brighter.... Its when I put it in and it sits correctly wont light up but if I turn back slighlty it lights up!!!! Do I just need to adjust the 2 connectors it sits on???

Never really dealt with this type of fitmenmt before... Cant be much just not turning on when sat in holder correctly.

Maybe as the bulb takes more power it needs a better connection. Perhaps put a bit of extra tension on the connector terminals and clean 'em up with some emery paper?

Yeah thanks Brian,

I tried bending them to give more tension but didnt change. What I will try tomorrow is bending them sideways slighlty to get a better connection. I cleaned all terminals up with emery paper so should have good connection.

Thinking of getting another headlight cowl unit, any suggestions? Mines been repaired loads of times so though about a UFO one or something, basically best for wire connections and ease of fit?

It sounds as though you have pretty much got the bases covered Steve!

That's a tricky question about a replacement unit as a lot of the after-market UFO, Polisport, etc headlight units have plastic lenses which will slowly but surely cloud up if you use a big bulb.

Try and get one with a glass unit. If you can get a s/h Raid headlight then I reckon that is the best possible on a TTR!

Otherwise you can add a couple of supplementary halogen spots that only come on with main beam. Very cheap on eBay.
