Hello all, having come from a trialling back ground, I have decided to have a go at Green Laneing and this week I have bought a TTR250 Open Enduro. The bike I am told is built on a 1993 frame, with a 2004 5GF engine having a Wossner graphite coated forged piston, CRD performance exhaust system,SHOWA 47mm inverted twin chamber USD forks. In the next week I will post some pictures for your viewing and thought on my purchase as a new starter.

Having joined the forum and read about the TTR's and their problem with the Sprag Clutch Bearing, mine may be showing signs of wear. I only mention this because it does have the symptons, having a slight knocking sound when you engage the starter and when you turn the bike off, I am no expert, but do I need to look at replacing the bearing? It doesn't sound that bad, any advice would be helpful.
There is a good thread somewhere on it, I am sure martyn or Brian will magic it up! I would take the starter motor cover off first and inspect the splines on the starter motor and the top idler, it's only 3 bolts so a five min job, then you will no more what you are dealing with.
If the sprag clutch has been sticking for a while it can damage the splines on the starter and the idle gears, these parts are also very expensive so if you check them first just to be sure.
It really is difficult to describe the noise made on shut down when a sprag needs replacing other than saying its a metallic bang which makes you wince
A clunk is OK and happens even with a new sprag fitted.
As you say it is difficult to say what it is and it does make me wince. I will check the splines on the starter as Domski1 says. If the gears and splines look oK is there anything to worry about?

If the sprag is wearing and starting to bang then damage may not have been done yet but, damage will be inevitable if a worn sprag isn't replaced.
It's a difficult call and, if you are unsure, it would be worth asking the opinion of a proper bike mechanic who you trust and hasn't got a financial incentive to condemn the sprag....
