Lightweight, rust proof, quiet after-market exhaust for the TTR? Try a Motad!

My friend Andy (who sells the TTR chain sliders and shock top bush kits) needs a replacement exhaust for his TTR. Not one to take the easy route such as finding a s/h one, Andy has made contact with a few exhaust manufacturers with a view to getting a small batch of replacement exhausts made up.

Only one manufacturer reckon they can make one that will match the original's low decibel level and that is Motad in Walsall.

So today Andy and I did the 6 hour round trip to lend them a complete running TTR250 to use in designing, manufacturing and testing a stainless steel exhaust.

Motad visit 13 Oct 2011 blur.jpg

Andy is on the right nearest the camera watching as his TTR gets put up on the ramp ready for use as Motad's guinea pig.

We were given a guided tour of the premises and we are convinced that  these are the guys that will produce what we want. The original exhaust has its gas flow measured and that is the target for the replacement which will be checked against the original on their dyno.

We are looking forward to seeing (and hearing!) the results and hope to be picking up the first batch of ten BSAU marked silencers in about 3 weeks time.

Watch this space wink

The investment in getting Motad to design and make such a small number means that we will be selling them to recoup costs and, hopefully, make a few bucks to subsidise my penchant for doing expensive things to my TTRs wink

Price to be decided once we have definite costs and have seen and tested the finished article. The aim is to beat the price for the FMF Q4 - and be quieter and better built biggrin

Bloody hell

I live approximately 4 miles from walsall you could have come in for a brew! I too would be interested in a quiet st/st exhaust, at right price of course.

Kind offer - would have been a lot nicer than the motorway brew!

Motad are making good progress. Had a phone call today to say that the exhaust on the newer TTRs (with the offset outlet) is over a decibel louder than the earlier one with the central hole confuse

Important as we challenged them to match the dB of the standard exhaust.

Got a road tyre to send off to them tomorrow to fit to the test TTR as the dyno didn't like the trail tyre cry

They Sound like the good stuff, My bike came with a staintune exhaust fitted and thank god also came with the stock exhaust as a spare, so my first mod was to replace the staintune POS with the stocker, instant peace, ran better, and no one knows I'm around which is important where I live surrounded by National Parks

I'd be interested as well if the freights not to much, that will be the catch I guess, but maybe not, the staintune I have only weighs about a kilo or so

Hi Steve

Noise is also the killer on the trails over here in the UK. If the locals can't hear you, they don't know you are there - hence our quest for a quiet after-market system!

The weight will be an issue but not the determining factor.

For instance, these guys weld fine stainless steel mesh to the inside of the outer exhaust shell to keep down resonance and help with sound absorption. Extra weight but worth it methinks.

It's that sort of attention to detail that gives me confidence they will produce what we want in terms of a value-for-money rust-proof replacement with the same decibel level as the standard pipe - I hope that isn't "famous last words"!

If they can do that and the exhaust is lighter than standard then we will be pleased wink

When I was despatching Motad were always the exhaust of choice. No rejetting. No plod worries. No MOT worries. And, as you say, they're made of stainless and were invariably happy left well alone for ever. So even if they just make a copy of the original out of stainless it will be lighter and will last longer. I look forward to the results.

Hi Folks

Please be aware that this is a photo of the prototype not the finished article.

Img8025a.jpg

The brief to Motad was that the silencer had to be as quiet as the original without a loss of power. The bike will be dyno'd this coming week.

Img8026a.jpg

The short tail pipe is to deflect the hot exhaust gas away from the number plate and the indicator.

It has a guard on the side of the silencer to stop the side panel touching.

Wow that was fast work! Personally I am not to sure on the end pipe, I know it will need something like that to keep the noise down and keep the hot gasses away from the plastics but it would be great if there was a way of tidying it up a little. Possibly just me though, great work nether the less!

Weight saving is not on the agenda. If it is lighter then so be it. THe primary concern was a replacement silencer, made from stainless that would be sturdy and quiet...and a lot cheaper than the Yamaha one that is no longer available!

The important thing is that this silencer and pipe are 100% stainless steel and therefore should be the last exhaust you will need to buy.

No more rotting out at the joint! smile

Have you got a price yet, I take it the link pipe just links to the standard front pipe. ?

Sorry not to have replied before.

A batch of bespoke TTR stainless steel exhausts have now landed in Devon. Photographs etc to follow along with prices.

There is a rumour that the new exhaust showed a useful power gain on the dyno compared to the standard box with only a tiny increase in db level wink

Sounds good, polished up well except for deformation where internal baffles are welded, fits perfect.

Hi Brian,

At work, there is an unused heavy duty (1000Watt plus) polishing machine with approx 4" rag wheel on one end, and approx 8" on 'tother. A guy suggested that I start with the darker dressing for the wheel, and work thro' to the lighter. After staying late for less than a couple of hours, this was the result :-

Just fitted one of these to my 325 and it fitted well and sounds great.

Made it a bit perkier as well which bears out Motad's dyno readings. Had to use a bit of gun gum on the silencer to header joint to get a 100% leak proof seal.

I haven't got any of the stacatto noise Andy mentions in the advert. The only sound is out the back as it should be wink

I chatted to Andy about the new silencer today and told him that I had tried the Motad on both the 325 and a 250 and, once properly sealed at the join between silencer and header pipe, there was none of the "staccato" noise he was worried about.

He asked if I would ask for feedback from anyone else that bought one of the new Motads particularly regarding this noise.

Is yours OK Alec?

Brian

I am well happy with the exhaust ever so slightly noisier when revving hard but the bike didnt rev so freely before. The noise is just different to the original a little raunchier if thats the right word but certainly not anoying like some intake noise.I certainly would recomend it to anyone else BTW the exhaust on my bike was fitted without any exhaust paste and sealed first time I just made sure the clamp was over the gap and tightened it up.

just read through this subject and all the post's, so am i right in thinking that if i am in the uk and send you £179.00 you will send me a slip on end can that will give me 4% more bhp which equates to 1bhp. is it me, does that not seem a lot of money for such a small performance gain or am i reading the post's wrong ?

Hi there

If your original TTR silencer is on its way out then it is a bargain way of replacing it with a 100% stainless steel sytem especially if the alternative is a new standard silencer from Mr Yamaha or a new FMF wink

Seriously, it won't appeal to everyone but there will be situations where it is a worthwhile purchase.

Brian

PS I am not the seller - Andy is - see above post.

Andy has just taken delivery of new stock.

The latest batch of silencers are fully polished and look great - see pics below.

They also have a graphite seal so no need now to use exhaust paste on the joint with the header pipe wink

I am looking forward to getting a polished one to put on my project bike biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Andy (Fixer) has the Motads back in stock again now biggrin

Motad has upped the cost on the latest batch which Andy has had to pass on - still excellent value for money though wink
