Rear grab rail handle question

      Just looking at my newly aquired 2005 TTR250R and there are no rear grab rails unlike my old serow. Could they have been removed? Should they be there? can I buy them and if so where from and how do they attach?

Sorry for all the questions but I think I will miss not having a grab rail or two

Hi Colin

Is your TTR an American import? If so, there are quite a few differences and no grab handles is one of 'em.

Otherwise a previous owner has removed them for whatever reason. I wouldn't be without mine as they are useful for moving the bike around plus the protect the indicators and bodywork a bit.

Yes it has a kick start

Just read on the Q&A on the web

The models sold in Europe have electric and kick start as standard making them "dual start" as well as having revised (quicker) steering geometry and suspension. The TTRs that were supplied to the USA are ONLY electric start  so I guess my bike is european and should have grab rails.

I think thats right

Good chance that's its a Euro/UK model then. In that case a previous owner has taken the grab handles off and lost 'em cry

And how do they attach to the rear frame? 

I am even considering making or obtaining one of these

Think I have solved the mystery of how the rails fit as I have been informed that there  is only one rear offside grab rail and it is obvious where that attaches.

The near side never had a grab rail?

I think thats correct!

I bought a new UK model in 2004 and a new Euro model in 2003 and both had a pair of grab handles as per pic below.

The rear fixings are shared with the indicators. See second pic.

Can't vouch for all blue TTRs having both. Anyone else know?

A part number for the LH grab rail would be useful wink

My 1993 Japanese import white TTR has a pair of handles just like yours Brian. I wouldn't be without them.

But then I fall off a lot!

We have 2010 TTR AUS/NZ spec with only one grab handle on right side.

It was Fowlers who first indicated there was only one offside rail fitted to my bike.

I have spoken to Yamaha technical department (UK) today, they traced my 'model number' from my frame number and they too confirmed only one offside rail.

Just need to find a second hand replacement one now, not sure this will be an easy task!

Grab handle a whisker to short

Tried my right hand side grab handle on the left side. It was just not long enough. 

May make an adaptor plate and see how it goes. Maybe santa will bring me a bashplate and 

left hand grab handle and a shorty header pipe from Totally TTRs  this xmas.

Pop to your local metal gate maker, been told they will cost around the tenner mark to make,
Then just paint to match.

They are quite a complex bend and fitting. I actually couldn't find anyone that would make them cry

Did you actually get some made up? If so, any chance you could post up some pics please?

PS You can get a LH grab handle to fit on the RH side by squeezing it up in the vice wink

Yeah my mate makes gates and fences etc, he knocked my pair up for me,
he said they were really easy to make, did them in his dinner break.

Grab Handle or Rail

Hi folks

My TTR has a grab rail on the RHS but none on the LHS. I took the carrier off the bike as I use it mostly off-road. Did they originally come with a LHS grab-rail? If not would a RHS grab-rail work on the LHS given that there seems to be mounts in roughly the same place?

Hi Alex

The TTR would have had both grab rails on when new.

It wouldn't be easy to swap the existing rail over without a bit of work.

It is good to have both so maybe put a wanted ad on the forum?

The racks fetch good money so, if you don't intend to use it, advertise it here and, when sold, you will be able to afford the LHS rail and still have money in your pocket biggrin
