$30 light bulb?!? wtf?!?

Hi guys,

I've got an '01 TTR250 that's been converted for street use here in the US.  I lost my low beam a while ago and went searching for a new bulb.  The bulb in there is a "KOITO 35w/36.5w Halogen" and its 30 freakin dollars to replace.evileye

The bulb doesn't cross reference with anything, but an H6M Halogen will fit, but when I plug it in, both beams are lit and my hi/lo switch does nothing.

Do you guys wire up another bulb type or a different lens housing, or do you just grit your teeth and pay $30 for a 10 cent lightbulb?

-Mike

Welcome to the forum Mike.

When my bulb blew I bought one of these:-
RMU417 RING 12v 35/35w BA20D Upgrade Headlamp Bulb (Upgrades 395 Std Bulb)
and I got it from an English dealer (Auto Bulbs Direct) whose web site is:-

CLICKY THING HERE

It is much better than the OE glow worm that Yamaha provides but I wouldn't depend on it for a long night ride - it's not as good as I would like but it does the legal requirements. wink

Also - as an after thought - I found this article in ThumperTalk which may shed some light on your dilemma:-

ANOTHER CLICKY THING HERE

I went through a patch of blowing bulbs. (Bad contacts.) I just bought new ones from scooter shops. God knows what brand. They were a fiver but they were the big round shape ones. Not like Martyns link. I might try one of those. Is it brighter?

What does yours look like, Mike? Is it a bayonet twist and fit job? It's possible to get them in the wrong way if things are a bit worn.

Andy, the bulb I bought and fitted is a direct replacement for the original big round type - no fiddling or jiggery pokey adaptions or anything - straigh in.
It is definitely brighter than the original big round bulb and I feel safer with it, but it still isn't a patch on my Bandit's 100/80 wat bulb.

These are the three different TTR bulbs that I have managed to source reasonably priced replacements for - see below.

The first is the 12v 35/35W halogen used in white enduro standard headlights:OE_12vbulb.jpg

The second is the 12v 60/55w H4 halogen bulb used in Raids and some blue TTR headlights - nice wink

The third is an ordinary (non-halogen) 12v 35/35w bulb used in some blue TTR headlights. Is this the one that your halogen upgrade bulb replaces Martyn?

Mine is the top one (35w/35w) shown above.  Its in a blue headlight housing (US spec bike).

The replacement I've tried is this H6M 35w/35w bulb.  The bulb is used in my chinajunk scooter:

The TTR headlight housing has a little indent in it that fits that nub on the top perfectly, like its supposed to go in there, but the bulb body is shorter.  I had to fashion a spring to push the bulb back so it would make contact.  But the contacts must be wired differently than the stock bulb, as both filaments light at the same time no matter the position of my hi/lo beam switch.

YES, Brian, the last bulb you show is the original one fitted to my TTR - I replaced the bulb with the one I detailed.

Thanks for your reply Brian.  Could you share your source for this bulb?

Thanks!

Hi Mike - I get them in packs of 10 from my wholesaler and sell them through my web pages - see http://www.ttr250.com/TTR_extras/ and scroll down the page to get the bulbs.  There may be a similar source in the States.

It must have been shere luck that the MOT was yesteday, as the headlight bulb blew out on the trails today. Was riding home in almost dark light, but luckily the high beam was still working.

Searching the net, I am amased once again how simple parts can be hard to come by the the UK for this bike (?).

Once again I found the answer lurking here!

p/s Brian, sent you an order smile

God knows what brand. They are a-five pink-collar family, but they are big and round shapes. Do not like Martyns link. I might try one of them. Brighter?

A quick revisit to this post has reminded me of a question I had. Can't remember why I didn't ask. The ones with the H4 60/55 bulbs, are they from the TTR600? I seem to recall someone saying that might be a way to fit a better headlight. Are they the same, or do you need a proper 250 one with an H4 fitting? Any ideas?

Andy
