My TTR goes "clunk" when the engine's stopped. It's a 2004 model, done about 6000 miles, mostly on trails. I've had it a year, and honsetly can't remember if it's always made this noise. I only noticed the "clunk" after reading about it on here. So should I be worried, and change the sprag clutch, or is this perfectly normal?
To help you judge, I've posted a video of the clunk (if that makes sense!) here:
Whist I have no problem with replacing the sprag if it's needed, I don't want to change it if, when I've done it, it's exactly the same! Besides, I've got other things for the bike I'd rather spend the money on, if the sprag doesn't need replacing.
Anyway, watch the video and let me know what you think.
Thanks in advance,
Nigel.

I have listened to the clip a few times, to be honest it sounds about normal, the first time was the loudest. Does it always clunk? I changed the sprag on my last 2005 ttr with 8000 miles on just really as a precaution and was a little disappointed as it still had exactly the same clunk. If you intend to keep the bike for a few years it would be worth maybe changing now and inspecting the starter gears etc.
I agree with Adam that it didn't sound too bad. With such low mileage (even given that there is a lot more stop/start on the lanes) it should be OK for some time to come.
Mine is the same, maybe not so loud. I find that once she is well warm and oily the sound drops to almost nothing. Does anyone have a video of a bike in dire need of a replacement sprag clutch?
I agree with the other guys, replacement not warranted as yet,I have this "clunk" on mine sometimes its quite pronounced other times hardly hear it. When it becomes consistently load I'll start to worry.
On your vid the first time sounded worse and I think it may have been more audible because the engine seemed to be running faster than tickover. were you still running on the choke?
LOL @ Jarrah
How did you get away with not only bringing your bike into the house but starting it up in there without being bollocked?
My misses would go ape**** if I done something like that.

Hey Nigel, how's that, your TTR looks almost exactly like mine, even down to the single sticker on the swingarm, bruised plastics and all, I have a rack on the back though
Don't worry about the noise, mine has made that sound since I got it
