Coughing and spluttering

Good morning all,

Having purchased a TTR250 beginning of this month today was the first ride, now before i go any further all i have done is replaced the stock exhaust with a Totally TTR's Phoenix full exhaust system that from reading to description does  not require any re-jetting so is designed to be a direct replacement for the standard exhaust.

So with that i fitted said Exhaust to the bike last week but as said today is the first time i tested the bike over any distance,  so below 30mph its ok until i try to wind the throttle on then it all goes pear shaped it coughs splutters nearly stalls,

i pull over let it get its breath back then pull away ok again get to 30mp  again  wind throttle on nope it  cough's splutter's until it drops below 30 then all ok, i have replaced the fuel line and ditched the filter i have pulled the air  filter out  that's clean checked the throttle slide does what it should do no apparent problems smooth operation idles fine no issues it only when i get to 30mph and try to wind throttle on does it have a fit.

any help info would be appreciated

Regards

Mick

Hi Michael. Sorry to hear you have problems.

My brother-in-law Keith fitted a Phoenix back along and it ran just fine with no changes to jetting. It would be interesting to hear of other owners' experiences with this exhaust.

Can I ask if your TTR runs OK with the original exhaust please so that we have a starting point to help you?

Brian

Hi Brian with the stock exhaust it wouldn't pull at hi throttle it was like it was being choked so yeah pretty much the same only its now more noticeable with the phoenix exhaust please bare in mind this is the first proper run with the bike as the only other time was over a short 100 yrds this time it was around half a mile in all gears find at 30mph and under but the minute you try to nail it it wont rev and coughs and splutters

Hi Mick

Sounds like you have another problem going on, I have not had anyone else say about poor running after fitting a phoenix and I have sold 30 of them to date, also if it was doing it before, fitting the new exhaust would not remove a problem like that.

1st thing I would check would be the carb inlet stub, take it of and make sure it is all intact and still bonded to the aluminium parts, that's an easy check, but it does sound more like a carb issue.

I would also check your fuel, is it fresh?

Also drain the carb to check there is no water in it, another easy thing to do, as the drain screw is easy get to, put a little container underneath, it's interesting to see what comes out.

Empty the emolsifier drain pipe, I had a TTR once that if it got wet, it would not run properly until I emptied that, never sure whyconfuseconfuseconfuse

Let us know how you get on, everyone on here is always happy to help.

Steve

Hi Steve thanks for the reply i'm guessing carb but just wanted to make sure, the fuel is as fresh as it was purchased that morning so the whole tank has fresh fuel, ive taken the filter out of the equation never did like inline filters i fitted the new fuel line in the hopes is was just not pulling enough fuel through the filter, the fuel from the take has good flow through the pet**** so that's not the issue. i have now spoken with the shop i purchased it from and will be dropping it back on their doorstep tomorrow morning.

i have a 30 day warranty so i guess they can sort it they said they will pull the carb apart and do an ultrasonic clean and rebuild i did tell them the exhaust is a direct replacement for the stock exhaust and that no Re-jetting is required so they have all the info now for them to sort it out.
