Hey guys. Got the TTR running. Ripped on it today. May not have been such a great idea. It cranked and ran like a dream. Lots of fun. Then went to start it and got nothing. It sounds as if the starter motor is the only thing turning. It is making a ticking noise. Bike isn't really trying to turn over. Occasionally it may exhale one puff from the tail pipe. I haven't noticed a. Rings worthy clunk. Reminder this bike has sat easily for 8 to 10 years in a barn. I sure hope I didn't squeeze the life out of her today. But she dang near blew my cowboy hat off.
I can try to post a video of the noise if that will help
Thanks! I have turned this bike around in 17 days. I am going to enjoy the Thanksgiving break before diving back in. I appreciate your input re the wood ruff key. To me this sounds Luke a more realistic issue than spray clutch. Who knows. I feel all in. The engine feels sound and strong. Enjoyed ripping the ranch. Thanks again.
Thanks again Ttboof - I am looking at partzilla here in US. The only place I see a woodruff key being used is in the clutch basket assembly. I attached the screenshot. Is this what you are referring to? (no. 2 in the parts diagram) Seems like I will really have to get into the bike - at least I could assess the one-way clutch while I am in there. Time to drain the oil and take a peek.
No it's on the other side goes into the crank and fly wheel .
It's part 20 on the crankshaft and piston screen $7,73 us
Have a read through Brian's replace sprag clutch thread it will help you diagnose the problem also the parts schematic for the starter clutch and starter may help
Ok that is starting to look like some pert scary sh!t. I do a lot of repair but am not a trained mechanic. Is that something you believe a decent shade tree mechanic can pull off? Do I have to remove the engine to do that? Look I ain’t sceert I just want to be mentally prepared. Thanks again
You can tell if the key has sheared by checking the timing marks through the viewing hole, with the cam cover off and the cam sprockets aligned. If the marks don't all line up you know there's something wrong.
Getting the flywheel off requires a bit of effort which will be wasted if it's not the key that's wrong.
