Just for information when you hear that dreaded "Clunk" sound when you stop the engine and your fears of having to replace the Sprag Clutch, its not that harder job. The sound was getting louder and more often when the engine was stopped.
2001 model with 16000km, we are the 4-5 owners looking at the bike from when we bought it
The process was simple to follow and rewarding in the end.
I live in Australia and the cost to purchase genuine Yamaha "STARTER ONE-WAY ASSY Part #: 4GY-15590-00" was over $312 AUD, I didn't want to go for aftermarket although temping for half the cost. I went to Partzilla in the USA and purchased Genuine for $112USD plus $40 USD postage total $152 USD converting to AUD was $215
It took 4 weeks to arrive during covid.
I have not worried about adding picture of the process as what is in the link is spot on However I have added a few picture of the old sprag, note the teeth fell out when removed off the large starter Boss
I had epic failure out in trail the other weekend. Luckily had back up bike and was able to get it back to camp.
Have it all toe apart. Just need opinions and advice if gear 3 is good or not and starter gear.
Gear 3 has looks of wear but nothing that can be felt. The starter gear has 2 Nick's on teeth. But compared to others I have seem with actual wear it looks premium.
The casing and sprag clutch are expensive so I wouldn't take a chance on re-using Gear 3 and suggest you replace it. I understand that it might not be ridged but it looks pretty scuffed up by, presumably, the worn sprag.
