I've got a 2003 ttr250 Enduro . I brought it knowing in had a few problems.  Now it starts on the buttom and runs sweet . But when I push the kick-start over there's a nasty grating sound ? Any idea what it could be ? I've not riden the bike yet so can't say if the gearbox is the problem  ? HELP

Just to clarify, are you pushing the kickstart with the engine running?

No just pushing the kick-start ( by hand ) with the engine not running

The mechanism is quite simple as you can see here.

Which side of the engine makes the nasty grating sound - does it sound like it is in the vicinty of the kickstart lever or is it coming from the generator casing area?

It sounds like it's from the kick-start side . I'm told the bikes been stood for some time .

I think you are going to have to take the clutch cover off to investigate properly - sorry!
