I recently purchased a bike that someone had previously bent the valves.  Valves were installed in the head but everything was in pieces.  I have been putting Humpty back together but have a couple parts I have no idea where they go or if they even go to the bike.  Please look at the image if I can figure out how to get it uploaded and let me know what I have.  I also have a couple questions...

1) I have it timed but the intake cam sprocket marks are ever so slightly not parallel.  How much of a worn timing chain is too much?

2) I don't see any way to secure the battery, it sits sideways in a box but what is supposed to hold it in there?  I'm considering running a couple zip ties around the box.

3) My bike has a speedometer gear on the front wheel, was it supposed to have a speedometer or just an odometer, I have neither.  

 

Im excited to get this thing running and out on the trails, I haven't ridden in 30 years!

Ok, I figured out the bungee looking strap, that holds down the back of the fuel tank, any ideas on the black round rubber hose adapter looking piece?  I am seriously hoping the steel piece doesn't go to my bike.

Welcome to TTR land!

TTRFan has probably the most encyclopaedic knowledge of TTR250 parts, so if he doesn't recognise them you're probably safe!

That metal part looks like the sort of thing that keeps a cam chain in place/on the sprocket, but I don't recognise it as a TTR part.

Pre 2000 ttrs had an electronic speedo driven of the countershaft sprocket with a hall sensor and spinning magnet. Post Y2K models have a cable driven mechanical speedo driven off the front wheel.

Battery box should have a lid which hinges at the bottom, held in place by a horizontal rubber strap. I expect your lid hinges have broken off of the lid melted against the hot exhaust at some time and was removed. Zipties will do fine!

The whole time I was putting it together I thought that metal piece had rubber attached to it and was some type of mount or stiffener/vibration dampener, after getting the head all together, I noticed it was indeed some sort of timing chain guide and I started getting nervous about having a major missing piece.  Alright, I am now back on track.

Hi Chadster, photo attached of the battery securing set up on my 2005 model for reference if it is of any help, it is exactly as mossproof describes (the additional wire tucked in is an Optimate charging lead).

I love the fact that you are calling your assembly project Humpty, that did make me chuckle, I'm sure all the expert advice on this wonderful forum (not mine I'm just a novice) will help you achieve what all the Kings horses and all the Kings men didn't!
