Battery tray melted!

Hi Guys, has anyone come across this problem, left my 94 Raid idling for 10 mins, coughed and backfired a bit, idle all over the place, then noticed smoke coming from under the side panel.

Took the side panel off which was very hot, only to see the battery tray melting onto exhaust and battery beginning to bulge.

Hasn't been used for a while, started up now and then.

any thoughts/experiences?

I wondered if it may be carb issue, blocked pilot jet possibly causing it to run hot, never had a problem before it was laid up.

Pics show the damage,any thoughts?

Thanks Paul

Seen that quite a few times, you will need to sort out why your bike is running so lean to get thaat hot.

Apart from warming up for cold starts or in freezing weather I don't think I've ever let mine idle for more than about a minute. I feel the heat soak from the motor on my legs if I do. Definitely worth chasing up a heat shield for the battery box. I think they come with one standard from Yamaha.

Thanks Steve, stripped and cleaned carb out,put fresh fuel in,seems to run lovely again,no backfires at all, ticks over great now.I put some insulated exhaust wrap around the section under the battery tray for extra protection as well. Now carb leaks from accelerator pump, suspect o rings have hardened over time,I see you list them but are out of stock, any idea where i can get 2? Thanks
