I've recently purchased a 1995 grey import TTR250 (wasn't registered until 2003) for myself as I've always wanted to do some trails, as well as road legal commutes to and from a short distance to work,
Not so specifically on a TTR250, but this one came up on my doorstep - and it was road registered, somewhat eye catching - I went and viewed it, test rode it and made a heat of the moment decision on the spot.
It came with receipts, 12 months MOT, new tyre and the engine ran well, I knew what to look out for thanks to the checklist. It does have a leaking gasket on the top end, however that can easily be fixed. There was no unwanted clunking and the engine ran sound.
I'm not familiar with the brand of aftermarket exhaust, nor the model of the bike itself other than it being a TTR250. The clocks aren't digital as expected according to some threads I've read, they're the needle type with no rev counter. 3 separate lights for neutral, oil cooler and something else. There seems to be an intermittent fault, upon turning the headlight on, the oil temp light appears to be lit. Bad earth? Can somebody please advise?
Also I would be intrigued to know more about the specific model of the bike and more information on the front end and rear tail that's on it currently. Can anybody please advise?
Also, what do you think the bike is worth? Mileage is all over the place on MOT history, however clocks have been changed and some read 'no odometer reading' - so unsure on mileage, other than that the bike runs sweet (that's all I was concerned about).
A very interesting first post that will have many of us scratching our heads
The headlight and rear mudguard are not TTR parts which makes things a bit difficult but, I think it looks like you have side "pods" rather than panels - although the photo is distorted so it's difficult to be sure.
If pods then it is possibly a Raid model as shown in these photos. Scroll down for more information.
If you grab the frame number from the bike that will help you - it's on the frame steering head.
Yep - that is a Raid with a headlight and rear mudguard from another non-TTR bike or after-market
Are there any clues on the instuments as to their make? A photo (or two) of them plus the exhaust would be helpful
Which gasket is leaking - the camshaft cover gasket or is it leaking around the decompressor blanking plug (which is the most usual cause of top end oil leaks).
Raids make good money currently - have a look at the sold ones on eBay to get an idea of prices.
A much decorated Raid!
From a distance the clock looks generic Yamaha. DT, XT or similar. Modified front wheel spacers to take a later speedo drive for cable speedo. The lights are normally neutral light (green), indicator flasher (amber) and headlight main beam warning (blue). Normally the headlight is permanently on, only switching from high to low beam with the left hand rocker switch. If you only have light on or off, you may have lost the low beam side of the bulb, or do you have a non original switchgear? I don't see any indicators...
Would be interesting to see pics of the handlebar switches.

Hi Moss, appreciate the response buddy. Yeah I mean headlight is off, on, and main beam on a switch. it isn’t always on so must have been wired in differently to OE in that case. There’s an oil light which comes on when main beam is illuminated strangely.

I will take a closer look tomorrow and photograph where necessary. The exhaust is aftermarket. It looks like it’s leaking from the camshaft cover gasket as far as I’m aware. I will change the plug if I can source one, as well as the gasket. Can these gaskets be sourced easily? Any guides as to replacing the gasket also? Any advice would again, be greatly appreciated!

This guide to removing/replacing the cylinder head covers shows the camshaft cover - you can ignore the rest of it! It is a straightforward job but make sure that is where the oil is definitely leaking from first as the decomp plug I mentioned is the usual cause of oil leaks at the top of the engine. See here to understand the part I am talking about.
