Air cleaner servicing

Air cleaner servicing would be the worst job on a dirt bike, pretty dusty here in South Australia so I really need to keep on top of the air cleaner servicing. Lucky for me both the WRR & TTR take the same filter.  I have tried many different brands but found the Twin Air to be the best for me.

In the old days we used to clean out in petrol & coat in engine oil, squeeze out & fit. Bit messy but the engine oil didn't last long. I have re tried this but not happy with the result. Also had the glue in some filters fail using the petrol !!!

Now I clean with a solvent, wash with warm water, dry in the sun & coat with filter oil.

So I use a large storage zip bag, put the dirty filter in the bag & add solvent, squeeze in the bag & work the solvent through the filter, remove & wash with warm water. Dump the bag into the bin.

I place the clean filter in a new storage bag & hang it on the washing line until dry.

When ready & add some filter oil to the bag & squeeze, work the filter oil into the filter.

Because I have 6 air filters I leave the fresh & ready to go filter in the sealed bag ready to get swapped over at a later date, Two advantages to using the storage bag is clean hands, you don't get the solvent or filter oil on your hands & number 2 the filter is stored ready to go in a sealed bag.

Nice clean filter, ready to oil

The storage zip bags, around $3 for a box of 15, can fit two filters in the bag

The air cleaner oil, won't damage the foam or glue

Clean filter in the bag to dry off & store, re oil when ready

The filter solvent, won't damage the filter or glue

I used to hate doing air filters but this is much easier & cleaner, what you thing ?

The bag is cleaner than the gloves & yes it the worst job on the bike but in saying that I washed the filter in the photo & hung it out on the line in less than 10 minutes, the solvent has soap built in so just wash under hot water & it suds up

Reassembly into the bike is messy & gloves required, me as a ex mechanic does not mind getting dirty but there is a limit

Anyone else have any tips on general service items or proceedures they want to share

Terry

I have a few twin air filters I agree with Terry that Thier the best . I see some places are selling the funnel web filters has anyone tried them. . looks like they might have as bigger surface area .

I do much the same but use kero its much cheaper than the filter cleaner. Have also used diesel but avoid petrol where possible.  I like to do all of my filters at once.  When dry I then have them all oiled and ready to go in their own bags. Good on long rides, you can have a spare filter pre oiled in a zip lockbag in your back pack with a pair of disposable gloves. Good insurance on high country rides Terry if you drop it in a river makes dewatering much easier with a dry filter.    Or long overnight desert rides that are dusty and require a filter change.

I have a couple of the funnel web filters and I rate them highly. I've had a couple on order for ages but supply seems a problem ATM.   The TTR filter is tiny compared to modern dirt bikes so clogs quicker.  The funnell webs by design have a larger surface area and definitely take longer before they clog with dust.

So the TTR250 filter fits the WR250R too!?, well it also fits my TT350 as well! biggrin But not my WR250F disbelief

I've tried them, the foam started to break up around the sealing area ( I use grease on the sealing area) this happened on a couple so I binned them.  No issues with the twin air

Years ago I used kero as well but you have to make sure you really get rid of the kero as it will damage the piston rings & or bore...when we used to overhaul engines would clean the block & bores with kero but had to use hot soapy water to remove all traces of kero.

The filter solvent has a soap included so during washing out under hot water it suds up & is clean as new. More $$$ than kero but IMHO safer.

I went away from the funnel web filters as the foam appeared to be breaking down, I was also using HiFlo but I believe the twin air is better, well so far anyhow.  Correct on a spare filter for the high country, it's a must.

Correct kero to get the filter oil out, then hot soapy water to get the kero out. Its a process thats why I like to do as many as I can at once so its less frequent. I'd rather buy extra aircleaners for more spares!! The funnell webs are holding up ok so far they are a few years old I'll keep an eye on them. Funnell webs and Hiflos are what I have will look at twin airs.
