Hey guys, new here, been reading up on a few posts. I am going to look at a 2005 TTR 250 today, gonna possibly trade some stuff for it which would put me about $550 in the bike if I decide to trade. The bike is currently not running, owner said the timing tensioner failed, but was running last week, he said it had some valve noise prior to the tensioner failing. He also said the starter gear needs replacing, which from my research, I think its the sprag that's failed. Anyway, my question, do you guys think that maybe the "valve noise" was actually the chain being loose before the tensioner completely failed? Also, do you think the bike is worth the gamble at $550 not truly knowing the extent of damage?

If the tensioner has failed, it will have damaged the valves cry seems a cheap bike at that price, even for a non runner, expect to pay out quite a bit on repairs though.

I would be doing the work myself, so that would save quite a bit of $$
