Hope someone can help me out here. Just got back from green laning yesterday and on the way back was a rattling noise. I stopped and checked everything out (or so I thought) and couldn't find anything wrong. I thought maybe the chain was slightly slack so adjusted it today anyway which it did need. However, I found a loose bolt in the lhs frame just near the drain tube. I can't think what is missing ? Is it some sort of shoe that sits over the chain ? Here are a couple of pictures to identify the culprit.

Hi Falkie

You are missing the chain roller which keeps the chain from grinding away the frame.

Hi Brian - I've just ordered two more as the last one only lasted about four rides. I changed the bolt and put a new bolt plus a lock nut on the end. The roller was spinning freely but on a ride out today it just got all chewed up. This can't be normal so I wonder what I may be doing wrong. Cheers and thanks for any suggestions

That's really odd and I am trying to think of possible causes confuse

With the rear wheel off the ground so it can be spun, if you look at the roller/chain from the rear of the bike does it all seem to line up properly? Just checking that the mounting was brazed back on correctly.

Do you run the chain real loose as it could possibly be "whipping" at the roller if that's the case.

Can't think what else might cause it. Clutching at straws, is the sprocket fitted the right way around? What's the chain slider looking like?

Yes..it's very odd. Here are some more pictures. Chain is not too slack. It all lines up just fine and the mounting looks good to me. The bearings (now exposed of course) all spin freely and the sprockets are on the right way around. Not sure what you mean by chain slider though.

The chain slider is the green plastic piece that protects the swing arm and bearings from the chain - see https://ttr250.activeboard.com/t50065200/check-your-chain-slider/

Have you got the rear suspension dropped really low? Lowering link, preload wound down etc? If so, the chain roller will be in very frequent contact with the chain, especially with a slack chain (although you mention yours is ok), and it's not really made for that. The hard plastic just gets eaten away.

Cheers guys for the tips. I am more used to the mighty XT500's which are simpler ! I've had a look at the chain slider and it looks OK but am going to whip it off to have a good look. Rubber protector also ordered and thanks for that. Mossproof - you may have a point there. I put in a lowering link and slackened off the preload due to my short legs. I'll wind pre-load up a bit and see if that helps. The chain is not slack though - has about an inch free play when on paddock stand with wheels off the ground.

Well I had a look at the chain slider and although it shows some wear, I think it still has enough to do it's job ? I also cranked up the shocker a few turns and increased the pre-load to 10 clicks in. Will see what the result is like in a few days.

A quick search has thrown up this previous problem for 'Falkie' that I also suffered yesterday.

I fitted a brand new All Balls Chain Roller on Sunday and went to work on the TTR yesterday. Bit noisier than normal I thought - 3 miles later at work looked the bike over and saw the Roller was missing !

The bike does have a lowering link and had worn the previous Yamaha Roller perhaps a little more than usual which is accepted with the chain slap etc but is there an inherent design flaw with this All Balls Roller ?

Can I just confirm that you do fully tighten the roller up with the locking nut and a washer each side  ?  You don't need to leave any lateral slack/movement on the bolt for these rollers ?  I tightened mine up fully and checked it rotated freely.

Hi there...yes, you do fully tighten the roller up with the locking nut and a washer each end. It does rotate freely. Mine also has a lowering link. I bought two when I had this problem and there has been no problem since I changed the roller. I have no idea what caused it - very odd but hasn't happened again. Probably simply because the bike knows I have a spare roller ! I don't think it is a design flaw, but what caused it to wear off like that is a mystery to me.

I’m in two minds as to whether use an All Balls again or try and find a Yamaha part. Perhaps a bad batch of rubber or a Friday afternoon part !
Ha, ok perhaps I’ll buy two and hope your same voodoo works for me.

 Hi Shortleg - yes...v odd and my chain was not extra loose. My best guess it that it stopped spinning round (maybe some grit got in?) so the rubber just wore off. The good news is that the voodoo works just dandy !!

I have a suspicion that the Allballs rollers are a bit brittle. With lowered suspension they come into contact with the chain much more often than normal. If someone with a gopro and a lowering link equipped ttr would do a little vid, it would be educational! (And safer than riding an undulating trail whilst looking down past your left buttock!)

Nice work on the chain slider Iran ttr. We have a saying "necessity is the mother of invention" if you can't get it, make it!
