Hi, my Australian 2006 ttr250 has recently developed an oil leak which seems to be coming from underneath the starter motor. I have done some reading on the forum and understand that it could be a cracked generator cover case caused by the sprang clutch making a clack noise on shutdown and sending a shock through the casing causing it to crack. My bike has made a clacking sound on shutdown since I have had it.
As the bike isn't road registered both the previous owner and me have used it exclusively for trail riding, I am pretty sure I need a new sprang clutch either way.
I haven't been able to pull the generator cover off yet to see if it's cracked. Is there still hope that it could just be a o ring or gasket? Do you have any examples of cracked cases so I know what to look for?
Many Thanks
Louis

Welcome to the forum! Sources of oil in this area: Cylinder base gasket, starter motor O ring, generator cover gasket, or worst-case scenario cracked gen cover or crankcase. The sprag clutches make a clunk as normal on shutdown, but a louder bang that makes you wince is bad news and the backlash can fracture the casing as you have read. Going to have to pull the cover off to have a look I'm afraid.
Thanks for the help guys ended up buy a new gasket this afternoon and took the generator cover off this evening. I saw the old gasket was split at where the oil was leaking by the starter motor. I installed the new gasket and that fixed the leak. Im relived that I didnt have to replace the whole cover and gears too. Ended up being an easy fix.
Once again thanks for your help
