Just an introduction, I'm REALLY happy I found this awesome forum first off! I bought my 1999 TTR 250(L)C in my home state of California(SF Bay area-ish) a couple years ago. Poor thing was sitting outside in the rain, sun and salt water right next to the Bay for several years. She was in bad shape and I, in all honesty, bought it for a mere $700 USD with all intentions of getting it running and selling it for a little profit. It really started to grow on me and here I am 3 years later and I wouldn't even consider getting rid of my baby! Front tire was flat, brakes were locked up, carburetor was off, old varnish turned gas in tank, plastics were completely oxidized, battery was gone, chain was rusted out....blah blah blah. I refinished the plastics, rebuilt and re-jetted the carb, opened up the stock exhaust, rebuilt front master cylinder, new seat cover....the list goes on and on( kind of like me!) To the best of my knowledge they didn't make street legal TTR 250s for the U.S. Mine has a Baja Designs street legal conversion kit on it. I am currently running a 14 tooth front sprocket and a 49 tooth rear. It is a blast to ride around town on! I am traditionally a 2 stroke guy but this one just won me over!
Great job. She looks awesome! I would love to get my hands on a street legal model in NC. They won't allow aftermarket modifications to make street legal here.
Can you list your steps and tricks to refinishing plastics? I'm refinishing some plastics now and I'm finding that a mix of sandpaper, scuff pads, heat gun, and soft wool buffing seem to work the best.
