I wash it in white spirit (from the inside out to flush dirt out rather than push it further into the foam), then warm soapy water, then dry, then reoil.
i use kerosene or diesel to get the oil out, then soapy water for all the dirt in the foam then rinse with clean water. I've always been told to avoid using petrol it accelerates wear on the filters can break down the glue. Having said that I have used petrol like when away on trips etc with no problems with occasional usage. If I'm in a hurry I will use a fan to speed up drying, don't use a hot hairdryer they can melt the foam, don't ask how I know this.
Vey quick wash in petrol, I found the OEM Yamaha filters didn't like petrol but the others I've used are ok, as I said quick wash in petrol & wash in warm soapy water followed by using filter oil, 200mm in a zip bag & work it in, also have pressure can as well.
Lucky for me the same filters fit the WRR & TTR, so when I prep a few I leave them in the zip bag oiled up & ready to go & just swap over at some stage.
Note the only filter I had problems with after washing with petrol was the OEM Yamaha one.
