Petrol leak
Permalink

Hi,

So I am a bit of a mechanical newbie (first post here too). I have a TTR250, but it stopped running. So I decided to try and clean out the carb as the first thing I've ever done to a bike (or even a car).

Seemed to go alright, but after putting it all back together it has started leaking petrol out of the breather pipe. Any advice on what I did wrong, and how to fix it?

Hi there and welcome to the forum!

It sounds like the float is stuck down.

With the petrol switched on, try tapping the float bowl quite hard with the plastic handle of a screwdriver. A sharp knock or two usually frees a stuck float.

Brian

PS If you can put some brief info on your profile (I am guessing you are in New Zealand!) that would be great wink

I did give it a few taps, will try again tomorrow a bit harder (kids are sleeping).

If that doesn't work I guess I will have to remove the carb again and try and free it?

I am afraid you will have to remove the carb again to get the float bowl off to check what's occurring cry

Excellent!

PS Where is your oil leak - are you OK with sorting it or do you need advice?

Not sure where its leaking as it's got quite a lot of oil on it atm. I will need to clean it off and have a better look. It seems to be somewhere near the top of engine and running on to the exhaust port.

A common problem as the old decompressor blanking plugs age, get brittle and stop sealing - see http://www.ttr250.com/Replacing_cylinder_head_oil_plug/TTR_oil_ali_plug.htm

So I cleaned it down a bit with some degreaser. It doesn't seem to be leaking from the plug. The only place I could see fresh oil after cleaning was below the exhaust pipe (attached pic).

Hi PetahNZ.

There isn't anywhere below the exhaust port that oil could leak. Looking at your photo, I am 99% sure that the oil is leaking from your decompressor plug hence the cooked on oil stains leading down from that area wink

Ok, I probably just missed cleaning some of it off.

Looks like that aftermarket plug is sold out, so I guess I will just have to get the original OEM one.

Thanks again.

I cleaned the plug and opening and applied Permatex Ultra Black Maximum Oil Resistant RTV Silicone on the plastic plug and inside the opening and it has not leaked since.  It can handle temps up to 500 deg F.  Just be careful not to use too much because you don't want that stuff migrating into your oil system and clogging ports.

Also, Teflon tape works on the decomp hole bolt to stop oils leaks that happen there as well.

I found this out by using synthetic oil which does a great job of finding the engines weak seal areas. no

Cheers!

Jeff
