Kick start lever travel stop
Permalink

Hi and a happy new year to you all,

Can anyone tell me what stops the kick start lever at the end of its travel when you  kick down on it?

On a friends blue tank model TTR250 the lever stops just before reaching the riders foot peg holder.

I have the same model  but my lever slams into the foot peg holder, and when I removed the foot peg holder it would continue much further still!

Kicking down on the lever turns the engine over, and the lever returns correctly (when it is unjammed from the foot peg bracket)

When I bought the bike second hand the lever had been removed but the rest of the mechanism was left in place

I am guessing that something isn't quite right behind the clutch cover, but what?

Your thoughts much appreciated

Might be worth having a look at the web page here http://ttr250.com/TTR_retrofitting_kickstart.htm

It could be that you are missing the stop plate.

Hi again,

I have now removed the clutch cover and had a proper look.

The part that Brian suggested is fitted, but I can see that it stops the kick start shaft on its return, after being kicked down. I cannot see anything that could limit its downward travel and nowhere where something appears to be missing.

Thinking about it a bit more I now believe that the natural downward direction of the leg when kick starting naturally stops at between the six o'clock and 5 o'clock position. If there was a mechanical stop it would really jar your knee when it stopped abruptly!

And I think the reason my kick start is getting jammed behind the foot peg bracket is because that bracket has become bent after many crashes. I think I can live with that.

All the best
