Oil leak alternator cover rubber šŸ˜”

Hi guys, please help, I just canā€™t seem to get the rubber seal from the generator on the crankcase to seal, it is, as they sayā€pissing outā€. Iā€™ve tried squirting gasket gunk round it, but so far to no avail. All sensible ideas welcome, cheers, Brad

It sounds as though the rubber seal around the stator wires isn't seated properly or is damaged.

I don't think you have any alternative but to remove the generator cover and give it a good coat of looking at - hopefully you will find something obvious that can easily be fixed.

Cheers Brian, I thought I had done that on numerous occasion!! I even spent Ā£15 on hi temperature silicone sealant!!! The rubber appears to be fine. Iā€™m going to order a new generator cover gasket from Steve and start again and keep all the spannerā€™s one the workshop crossed. Another anomaly which has been baffling me is the oil becomes contaminated very quickly, even after numerous oil changes it comes out grey, any ideas?? Cheers, BradĀ

That bung is a sod to seat properly sometimes. I'm sure you'll get there in the end, provided it is in tact.

Grey oil is a worry though. Grey as in metal contamination you have something serious going on and further internal investigations to find out what is wearing against something it shouldn't be is urgently required. Dark grey nonmetallic could be your clutch plates disintegrating. At least pull both side covers (LHS will be off already!) and have a good look round.

Yeah clutch plates sounds likely the clutch makes a strange whining noise when released, Iā€™ll try changing them they were only just in tolerance last time I checked. Your analysis of the generator rubber being difficult to seat is very helpful, I love plodding around on my little raid, but have spent soooooo much renevating it and still it fights me. I have another engine, I think Iā€™m going to slowly build from the bottom up, thanks again for your support, if you need me Iā€™ll be in the shed šŸ˜¬šŸ˜¬šŸ˜³šŸ¤ŖšŸ‘

Ā the Bung i found sealedĀ  well but has to be done with the coverĀ  removed , seal around the faces and around the wires in the inside , if the grey oil is just grey could be clutch plates , however does tend to discolour fairly quickly which is normal , if it was metal you would most likely find a lot of shiny bits in the oil and filter .

Cheers chaps, Iā€™ve ordered new clutch plates, I think the oil leak heard us talking about it as it seems to have stopped for the minute, perhaps all the oil has come out???? Itā€™s just encouraging to hear that the rubbers a bugger. I will just keep at it diligently. Thank you both for your input.
