Hi recently bought my TTR 250. The first ride revealed that the front end seems to ping off most things rather than suspend nicely. The original owner had put new seals on and replaced the oil for 7.5wt.
I was wondering if anyone uses lighter wt oil such as 5wt to soften the forks? the tyre i noticed are in good condition but are 9 years old too. do you think this may have an effect on the front end handling?
OR is there anything i should do/ try to the forks first, before changing the oil?
I am not a heavy rider about 70 kg ish! with kit on.
Sorry for my ignorance, but its a steep learning curve for me.
Welcome to the forum!
Check there's no air pressure in the forks (schrader valves in the top caps)
Compression damping is adjustable via a screw hidden behind a rubber plug in the bottom end of the fork.
Worth checking these before you go in for anything more advanced! TTR forks are generally believed to be quite good for the era and if you search Geoff Ballard on this forum you'll find plenty of comments about his use of ttr forks on his wr for some enduro races.
Tyre pressures?
Ride safe,
Simon.
Thanks for the info Martin, Simon. I will check out the linkys. The tyres are Michelin ac10's air pressures are 15 in front and rear. But like I say are 9 years old. Read somewhere that after 5 or 6 that they should be replaced??
Next will be the carb, as there is a little hesitation on throttle and slight jerkiness. Smells a little rich as well.
