Mystery oil leak from header pipe?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone's ever experienced a similar issue, and could offer advice?

I've got some oil blowing/leaking out the front of the engine block from the header-pipe intake.  Please see pic attached (you can see the dark oil patches on the fins of engine).

I initially thought it was a problem with my rocker-cover gasket, so I replaced that.  Then I figured it was my header-pipe gasket, so I replaced that also (and am pretty sure i've done a good job on tightening all nuts etc), but neither of the gasket replacements has fixed the issue???

I'm not losing a massive amount of oil and probably wouldn't even need to top up oil levels any more regularly than normal, but it does annoy me that I haven't fixed the issue.  Any ideas?

Also, how often should I be replacing oil?  I've been doing it every 2000kms... but am thinking potentially more often?

Cheers guys/girls...

matt

Hi Matt,

Looks like the common old Decompression Plug Seal leaking.
The Decompression Valve would normally go in there but doesn’t seem to be used on the TTR so it’s just “blanking Plug.”
The original factory Plug goes hard/brittle and loses its ability to seal up the hole and even if a little oil escapes, it spreads around and looks like a lot.
Totally TTRs Shop has an excellent “fix” for it with a machined alloy plug and an O Ring that can handle the heat created in the area.
My TTR had a same problem a few years ago and I fitted the TTR Shop Plug and haven’t seen a drop since.
Brian has an excellent instruction on how to removed the old Plug (I think in the FAQ section or attached to the Parts Shop where the Plug is shown).
Be very careful with the threads in this area as the castings are getting old and have had to suffer being very hot and cold over the years so are getting weaker.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Jeff

Hey Jeff - thanks for the thoughtful reply mate. Really appreciated.

I've emailed the guys at TTR Shop and hopefully will have a reply soon.

Shiny side up!
