Trouble starting from cold
Permalink

Hi,

Had my TTR about 6 months and never had a problem with it until the last couple of weeks.  I'm a pretty casual rider at the moment as i Go out alot with my son on his PW50 (he's 5) so maybe every 2-3 weeks.

Have checked and charged the battery and replaced the spark plug (correctly spaced) but still the same issue, that it's really struggling to start.  Not cold over here at the moment (15C) but have tried with choke out, in and halfway with no change.  Same issue using electric and kickstart but once it's started it runs fine and if I turn it off it starts again fine, even after a few minutes.

I'm guessing it has to either be:

a) fuel - seems unlikely given it runs fine once started

b) spark - thinking that the spark to keep it going doesn't have to be as strong perhaps

Any ideas to check before taking it into the local bike shop would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Woody

Turning over slowly on electric start, or just not firing on starting? Once running plenty of power etc?

If it's been sitting a while I'd say stale fuel. Drain the tank and carb and try fresh fuel. If hard to start all the time every 4 stroke I've had its been valve adjustment. But TTR valves don't move much at all ;)

Ok thanks, definitely not stale fuel as it's been refreshed fully over the past month. Sounds like it may need taking into the garage!

I still think fuel. 3 or 4 weeks is enough to caause hard starting. The Aussie fuel goes stale quick especially in the carby   Just makes the cold starts harder but will.run ok when warmed up. Fresh 98 and cold starts easy

Our TTR and WR 's are the same.  EFI is better than carb for this.

I routinely drain the  carb before storage if I know I'm not riding for a couple of weeks. only takes a couple of seconds.   The fuel in the tank could be ok still. If not I put mine in the mower or car.
