can I get parts to stop play in the joint? or do I have to get the whole rebuild kit?

You can replace just the shock bearing and seals without buying a whole linkage kit Chris - see here

I have never replaced the linkage bearings in any bike I have owned...

I mix a 50/50 brew of grease and CRC Lanocote rust preventative paste..

Good idea I've been using marine grease but it still breaks down looked up the link and might add a bit of lanolin
