Tiverton area trail ride - 28th May 2019
Permalink

There are a few areas of Devon that don't get ridden often as the lanes are quite far apart but today we gave some attention to the Tiverton area.

We met at mine (me and brother Trev on TTRs, Jim on Djebel, Kev on Honda 250 and we met Mike (DR350) at our brunch stop in Tiverton.

We rode for just over 5 hours, covered a total distance 67 miles rode 33 lanes.

Trev with his very tidy TTR.

Same spot in the lane:

Tiverton run with Trev Jim etc - 28th May 2019.jpeg

We had an early al fresco lunch as, once past Tiverton there were no shops or cafes (or even open pubs) until we returned to civilisation at the end of the run no

We cut the route by a few lanes when we hit the Crediton road and instead went to MotoVelo in Crediton to mix it with the hipsters and sample their great coffee biggrinbiggrin

I am sorry not to have taken better photos but it is a tad difficult when you are run leader but I promise to try harder next time!

In my back garden Brian did you do binne water 191-011 not been up the river this year yet gave it a look in march and it was a little deep to give it ago and as I was billy no mates and its along push to get the bike back to the road from the river I went round. But only on a trials bike as just the ford horse crossing is near impossible to get onto for all but the best Enduro rider without killing themselves but easy work for a Montesa

Hi Martyn

We didn't get that far west. I have what I call a Mid Devon run that Welsbeare Lane would be on but haven't ridden that route for about 10 years. We used to divert around the bridleway when the drop into the river was impossible. Can you still do that or have they put up horse gates on it?

Must do that Mid  Devon loop again before everything gets overgrown.

These are the lanes we rode:

Some nasty high horse boards now block the bridleway it would take a good endure rider and a 100% commitment I'm going to make it over to have a go on any thing other than a trials bike but would make for a good dam good laugh seeing them that think they can have a go. The montesa made it look easy and one end it was but the river end was the one that bit me I went over the bars lucky I was on me tod no one to take the piss laugh at me falling down the bank into the water and I can wipe the video after and no ones the wiser...………...

The lanes range in length from just a few yards to about a mile.

In Devon, the majority of our "green lanes" are old Parish roads that the tarmac gangs didn't bother with back at the beginning of the 20th century. This was usually because there was a boggy or very steep or awkward section in it that they couldn't get the steam roller through safely. This means that most green lanes are therefore fun to ride.

The trick in planning a trail ride is to string as many green lanes together with as little tarmac in between as possible. Even better if the steep lanes are ridden uphill biggrin

Our UK off road riding is totally totally different to what you guys do.

Brian

Thanks Brian

It's good to see and hear about your lanes it's interesting

So different from where I ride no need to link trails  all in one forest at a time easy to ride 6hours and see no one or any black too

A great day out and the TTR didn't miss a beat!

After over a year of not riding the lanes I was worried that I would make a fool of myself, but took it steady away and the TTR made it a nice and easy ride.

I was TEC, so even if it went wrong no one would have been the wiser...

It did prove how unfit I am though, as helping to push Mike's DR350 up and out of a lane after he parked it in the hedge left me out of breath for far longer than it should blankstare

PS Brian always seems to find a pasty!

I've noticed this tyre choice on many of the ride reports but here it is block pattern tyres, any reason for this tyre choice, I thought the mud would fill the tyres tread

They are not just any old block-pattern tyre Terry - they are the magnificent Pirelli MT43 X-ply tyre biggrinbiggrinbiggrinbiggrin

A lot of us in Devon use them as we have a lot of road work between lanes and the tyre stands up well to road use at low pressure - unlike the more modern radial trials tyres.

I have a spare wheel with a MITAS CO2 fitted but that's only for when we go to ride lanes that are properly deep in mud

It is surprising how well the MT43s clear mud from their tread especially when run at 4-6 lbs pressure wink

A few years ago I replaced the Dunlop 803 trials tyres on my
Montesa 348 Cota trails bike.... since they were only 1/4 worn
I put the rear on my XR250.....
I melted the rubber in 10kms on the road... you don't use real
super soft trials tyres on the road... they don't like heat...

Have you looked at the Kenda equilibrium... trials block patten
but with a slightly wider block spaceing..

MotoZ make one with the trails center block patten… but with more of a knobbly
style side tread for better cornering in the dirt...

I remember when block pattern tyres were standard from the factory
