Yet another problem I have encountered.... I have serviced the carb (ultrasonic cleaned and All balls service kit fitted) and the bike sounds and runs lovely....until I hit a long strech of uphill road in high gear and the bike eventually cuts out. It seems the carb is being starved of fuel. The bike will not initially start after this but after a few moments is does when the fuel fills the carb. Is this the float and needle valve playing up?
Put a rag under the carb and undo the float bowl drain plug. With the petrol tap switched on do you get a good flow from the drain? If not, the likelihood is that the petrol tap filter(s) in the tank or the filter above the float needle are blocked.
Could the fuel cap vent be blocked perhaps such that a vacuum is building up in the tank preventing the petrol from going into the carb? TBH, I have only ever heard of or experienced this on the plastic tanked models.
Is the engine getting hot since the carb rebuild? Although extremely unlikely, the engine could be beginning to seize but then works OK again after cooling down.
To close this thread I found the issue was my fuel filter. I had bought a polisport filter with 6mm inlet/outlets. I replaced this with a bigger volume filter with 8mm inlet/outlets and problem solved.
