I have Offline Maps. It's good when in remote locations where there is no phone signal. Was put onto it by a boaty, apparently its good offshore. Certainly works well enough in Victorian forests without phone signal, just GPS signal. Mapping isn't as good as a proper GPS but a good back up and good to pinpoint ones location..

Recently I have been using Strava. Its good to record rides on a map and gives distance, average speed elevations etc. I think its popular with cyclists and walkers but works fine on a trail bike too.

If you are talking about Laos, Cambodia and Thailand use MapsMe. The timings are always off but you can download the whole countries easily, towns gave lots of details such as fuel and hotels/hostels etc.

I couldn't recommend it enough for those countries

Has anything changed much in the last 6 years?

My brother wants to change his role in our group rideouts from jester to navigator but he hasn't any experience outside google maps and road satnavs. His requirement is for an iphone based app with offline/downloadable maps - Europe topo and UK Ordnance Survey type maps, into which he can load TET trails and our own generated gpx routes.

A couple of mates use Gaia, which looks good, but seems to have a few glitches, usually taking ages to boot up, and is not the cheapest. The UK OS map app will presumably not be useable in Europe. DMD2 I have no experience of. I remember Dan and others talking about MapsMe - is this simple and user friendly enough?

I use a Garmin Montana 600, which apart from being a bit small to focus on with my ageing eyes, has City Navigator for satnav, UK OS maps and Europe Topo active, and I have a separate sd card with all my Morocco stuff on, so does everything I need, but bro wants to use his phone...

Simon

I use these when riding, so you can look down and read the satnav/ maps clearly.
