Drive shaft & gear selector seal
Permalink

Im due to change out the drive shaft seal and gear selector seal tomorrow.
I have spares that came with a bike, all appear good.

Is there anything I should be particularly wary of or are there any "pro" tips I should employ!- I saw Brian had advised someone on this before- possibly using 2 seals fro the drive shaft?..is this to ensure the seal doesn't get damaged when installing (similar to driving home with a socket)

Thanks in advance

Regards

Rod (back from the dead!)

Morning everyone...it's good to be back!

Unfortunately, the last 12+ months have all been injury laden!
I had a back operation, about a year ago to remove a prolapsed disc- it had been causing me upset for the last 4 years & was getting worse(insert couldn't walk!)
I recovered brilliantly...the surgeons are absolute Gods!!

...06 months on,I snapped my Achilles Tendon, running to help a woman whom came off her bike doing a practice emergency stop.
I opted to try to let it heal naturally, rather than another operation & so for the last 06 months, ive been off work, unable to drive/ride or walk my dog...leg in a boot/pot...its been so upsetting!

Anyway..i'm again on the mend and can walk again, but I dont think I will be challenging Usain Bolt for his title for the next 12 months!

Trips planned..when I injured my back & just before the operation, I bought a Hymer motorhome...with a bike rack, so a TTR or Serow can be transported easily.
It also allows me to carry camera gear etc
Ive been travelling around UK, just short 5 day jaunts- but without the bike, as until recently, I couldn't ride it...hence the service, as its been stood for the last 8 months!

I have no immediate plans to do another trip using TTR's, until I can get them all sorted & "adventure ready"..so I think this summer will be spent stripping frames/servicing, welding etc
I have a partially finished OE that I started to photograph here (polished swing arm etc)...its still in bits!..so that is my first project, after I get my Raid training bike sorted.

So...is there anything I should be wary of when changing the drive shaft seal?- I assume it hooks out, like many others do?...please dont tell me its an engine split job!!!

Hook them out just make sure the shafts are 100% clean and lubed before you push the new ones in

Sounds like a rough time you've had but good your on the mend and back in ttr world

I've been down a similar track

Thanks for the info on fitting...I will report back.

I used to scoff at people whom had back injuries, thinking it couldn't possibly be that bad....my opinion has completely changed now & I treat my back with respect- I sincerely encourage people to look after their backs!

Drill it carefully (don't follow through too deep) and screw in a self tapping screw to grip and pull on.
Glad you're mending Rod,
Simon.
