So, I don't believe that any TTR250s sold in the US had a kick start. I would like to convert mine to dual start using OEM parts and I imagine the bits needed were likely used on other machines available in the US. Does anyone have information on this subject to share before I go digging? Maybe point to a thread somewhere that this is covered? I appreciate any input.
Only used kickstart assemblies are now available and they are like hens' teeth and, when they do appear for sale, they sell quickly and at a high price.
If you search this forum for "kickstart" you will get mostly "Wanted" ads.
My TTRs have kickstarts on them and they are rarely, if ever, used. If the sprag clutch is in good condition then the only maintenance on the TTR's electric start you are likely to need might be a set of new starter motor brushes after many years of use. If you are worried about a flat battery then invest in (or make up) a set of jump leads
Thanks, guys. I jumped the gun on this one. I found a ton of good information on this forum about kickstarts moments after posting the question. I don't really need a kickstart but I think I want one. Something I do want to know is whether or not a kickstart case was available on a different machine? Maybe an early ATV or even from a different displacement engine. For example, did a 1986 Yamaha XT 350 (or similar) have a side cover and kick assembly compatible with the TT250 case? I would expect that Yamaha recycles components and design as much as any OEM but I don't have the product knowledge to be able to point to something specific that directly interchanges.
A question that has been asked a lot of times but, sorry, I am 99.9% sure the answer is no. A few owners thought they had found an alternative but no luck when it came to fitting them
