I have read a thread or two on VIN numbers on here and elsewhere on the Net, but not sure what to make of my VIN number.
According to everything i have seen the 10th digit is the year of manufacture and until 2000 it was represented by a letter - in this case apparantly "Y". From 2001 and up the year is represented by a number - "1" for 2001 and so on.
The tenth digit of my VIN, however, is "0" so not sure what to make of that. The registration documents and date of registration is not conclusive as the bike may have been used on a farm initially and only registered much later.
Other clues is the engine number stamped on the engine casing starting with "4PX" and a sticker on the frame under the seat area that reads "4PXE-010" and the letter "A"
Any idea what all this means? Bike is in South Africa and an official Yamaha import although from where i do not know.
What exactly are you after - the year of manufacture?
If so, email Yamaha Customer Services your full frame VIN number and they will likely oblige. They did for me in the UK. But you have to pay to get a paper dating certificate e.g. to get an age-related registration number in the UK.
