Bike cranking but won't start

Hello I have a problem. My bike will crank but won't start. I have checked the fuel lines and the carb is properly tuned. It was running good the other day, I went out during the night (in the city) but after a few minutes of riding my headlight died so I was forced to turn back. When I tried to start the bike today, it just keeps cranking and won't start.

I noticed faint smoke coming from the starter but I didn't notice anything burnt externally. The battery was at full charge and drained after a few tries of starting and I have already recharged the battery and drained it again trying to start the thing. I figured it might have something to do with when my headlight got busted? I wonder what's wrong...

I also can't bumpstart the bike as it doesn't have a kicker and it also seems to have abnormally high compression that the rear wheel slides when pushing the bike and releasing the clutch with someone riding the bike on 4th gear and I am miles away from any inclined road where I can just coast down to bumpstart.

So, yeah... I wonder if anyone here can shed light to this phenomena. confusedoh

Your TTR needs three things to start, compression, fuel and a spark. Also, delivered in the correct order wink

You have compression so try the simple checks first.

To check you have a good flow of fuel into the carb and that the filters aren't blocked, make sure the fuel tap is off, put a big rag or catch container under the carb float bowl, open the drain valve and then switch the tap to on. There should be a good flow of fuel. If not, you need to check and clean the filters.

Take the spark plug out and refit it to the cap. Lay the body of the plug on the cylinder head, turn the engine over and check that you have a spark. If you don't then we enter a slightly more complicated area so maybe come back to us again if this is the case. Looking at your photo of the wires exiting the generator cover, a couple look frayed. Check that the insulation hasn't worn through and the ignition wire is shorting out,

PS I just re-read your post. Tell us a bit more about the headlight incident. When the headlight went out, was the engine still running and were you able to drive it home OK? Was it just a blown bulb in the headlight caused it to go out?  Just trying to work out how the incident might relate (if at all) to the TTR not starting.

Hmmm yeah all those things seem to be in order.

I'm actually running an aftermarket LED headlight with a separate switch. The lights just flickered and died then the wire to the aftermarket switch was warm. Bike didn't die though but I think it almost died or idk maybe it was just me being surprised at the flickering headlight... the voltmeter also gave some weird (below 9V) readings before going back to normal at 12.5-13.5V before I parked the bike. I also mentioned there was faint smoke from the starter the first time I tried to turn on the bike today, but was gone after a few tries.

Was the plug wet when you took it out after turning the engine over?

If not, then fuelling is likely to be the issue.

If it was, perhaps try a new or different spark plug?

If you are getting a consistent good spark then the plug cap, lead and ignition coil must all be OK.

Spark seemed really weak when i took the coil out. Also after a few tries, no more crank just a weird buzz. Starter relay maybe?

If you attach a good battery via jump leads, does it turn over OK then?
