engine noise.

Hi All, i have just replaced the piston rings, done valve clearances to 0.010 " exhaust and 0.007" on inlet.  Also replaced sprag clutch.  On trying bike out, there is a huge rattle from the engine on over run.  About 5 or 6 sprags were out of ther race on arrival, which i have replaced.  On talking with steve, he said this does happen sometimes, and if they are replaced wrong then the sprag will not go on.  I replaced the valve shims with the original. they are now 0.006" exhaust, anfd 0.004" inlet.  The noise is still there on over run.  I know there is slight wear in the cam chain, as the lines are not quite parallel at TDC, but the tensioner has a long way to go before running oit of adjustment.  You can also hear a bit of a rattle noise on idle and revving slightly when the bike is at standstill coming from the sprag clutch area.  Anyone had a sprag noise or issues like this before?  Oh yes, i replaced the large gear behind the sprag as well.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Just to clarify does the noise happen when parked or on the move.

Just asking as if it's when moving it could be the chain guard around the front sprocket sounds bad but easily fixed with a bit of a file

Hi, The loudest rattle is on the move whan closing the throttle. I have pulled the clutch in at the same time and later, and the noise disappears. There is a "modified by me" chain guard over the front sprocket and is nowhere near the chain.

Thanks.
Mike

Moving on decel and closed throttle will hopefully help us narrow it down .

Thanks for checking the case saver as its the most common cause.

Mine made a realy terminal noise but it was a clunk when shifting down. That was caused by the top back engine mount was slightly loose

How does the swing arm slipper look if its badly worn the chain might be rubbing on the swing arm seals

Does it have a sump guard on is it fitted on tight not vibrating against the frame or cases

Just trying to elimate any possible causes as its usually outside the engine.

Slipper is almost new. sump guard tight...been off and on a few times this week. Done 120 miles on it today with ear plugs in....Noise almost disappeared completely. Ha ha. I have checked everything possible, you can also hear the rattly noise like loose tappets at about 3500 rpm on the stand....without ear plugs. One of those things i reckon will have to develop unfortunately. Checked cam lobes and followers again, they look perfectly ok to me. Oil pump seems to be working ok. Only other thing could possibly be main bearings if no one has had trouble with rattling new sprag clutch. Noise seems that it is is coming from left hand side more than right when riding.

Thanks for your input

Mike
