Hi guys, which direction should the starter motor spin. I have removed the generator cover and can se the splines of the starter motor. I'm doing the Sprag clutch and have replaced the starter motor brushes also, there was lots of whirring with everything togethe, but a lack of starting, cheers all, Brad
I was hoping someone else would answer as I can't recall off the top of my head which direction the starter motor spins and I couldn't find it by searching the archives despite being sure that it was covered in a thread somewheres
If you have re-assembled it correctly as shown in the starter web page here then it must be spinning in the correct direction!
If you think your sprag clutch is faulty then an easy check is to take the starter gears' three-bolt cover off and turn the gears by hand. They should turn freely in one direction but not the other if the sprag teeth are engaging on their boss correctly
If the gears spin both ways then there is a problem with the sprag.
Your bloody brilliant you are Brian thanks. The Sprag is brand new from Steve so I'll bolt everything together carefully and see what happens next!!! Worryingly when I pulled everything apart and revealed the crank bearing that the Sprag mechanism bolts to, the lower "ear" of the crankcase fell off. Have you ever had such a problem before. I can't see any other damage
thanks so much for all your help, voice sounds fine

Not sure what you mean Brad - got a photo? Or can you identify it on someone else's photo perhaps?
