R&M on the WR250R

Thought I better do a bit of R&M on the WR250R, she's on 13500kms & only two years old, heading up to the Flinders ranges next month for 5 days riding with a few mates.

New DID chain

New sprockets, standard ratio of 13 & 43

New chain slider

New chain guide block

New MT21  120/80 - 18 with new heavy duty tube

New axle blocks

Also removed the lower chain roller, cleaned & lubed

I would really like a wr250r or x, shame that the secondhand ones are massively overpriced and they no longer sell them new in the UK.

Looking good Terry.

Tell me, what do you find the differences are with the MT21's and D606's you use? They are both very popular tyres and I'm about to buy a set of MT21's for my second set of rims for the TTR for adventure touring. Seem like a decent knobby that is slightly more road orientated. Currently using D605's for adv touring but not happy with them offroad. Bit too slippery, great on the road though. I think the MT21 is probably a good compromise, and is likely to be safer/slightly more compliant on the road than a pure knobby?

I keep thinking about the WRR as a future bike to go with my TTR as well....these posts don't help!!

Leigh, I am running D606's on the TTR & MT21's on the WRR, I rode the TTR last week & thought the tyres were shocking, it sort of tips over & feels unstable, the front on the TTR with the D606 suffers from understeer the turn in is slow & a little floaty.  The MT21's on the WRR are without  bull**** are fantastic, the front grip is outstanding, I like a lot of front grip as I do hit the turns with a bit of speed & have never been worried about the front.

The MT21 feels like a softer tyre than the D606, I run 15psi front & rear on either bike, the D606 are noisy on the road & sound like a old Landrover coming down the roads where the MT21's don't make any noise.

I have to say that I have not run MT21's on the TTR but I will replace the D606 with a MT21 when it needs replacing, they are around the same price so the cost is not a issue.

The MT21's on the WRR are wearing ok, so I get 5000kms on the front & around 2300-2500kms on the rear so 1 front to 2 rears & not a lot different to the stock OEM Bridgestones fitted to the WRR, the TTR had Dunlops from the factory.

Lot of WRR riders have a MT21 on the front & a D606 on the rear but I stuck with the MT21 120/80-18 so not to gear it up they also come in 120/90-18 same as the D606.

In short I love the MT21 tyre & the WRR, such a great combo, hope this dribble is of some help Leigh.

You would not know yourself if you get a WRR, my mate bought one, rode it last week & loved it, he was raving about it on the phone, now he understands what I've been saying for the last two years

Hi Terry

Thanks for your thoughts, confirms what I've been thinking and also similar to other feedback on the internet. From what I can tell a lot seem to go the D606 rear for longevity more so than grip. But running a 250 I'm not really concerned about longevity, I'd rather have traction.

I have a friend with a WR250R and the first time I road it the better suspension and power were fairly obvious. It had D606's on it at the time and they felt very slippery.

I have this idea of buying another ttr250 one day that is sub 1000klm and like brand new (which are getting rare these days), but makes more sense to buy a wr250r and maybe do a full restore on the ttr sometime. Anyway, fun to dream about this stuff.
