A year a go I went through my TTR 250 to make an overlanding bike. One of the first tasks was to lower the overall bike 3".
After 2000 miles this summer of riding dirt roads/two track in the back country of Montana my forks would clank on big hits, especially with 10lbs of air in each to offset the luggage I was carrying.
After one long trip I , disassembled the forks thinking something was broken or I had assembled the forks in correctly. It all looked good. Then thinking about the vintage of the bike, I decided that the newer light weight fork oil I was using was maybe at fault. Instead of the 2/5 weight fork oil at 130mm that I had used, I reassembled the forks with 10/40 synthetic motor oil with 110mm of space from oil to top of collapsed fork leg. Huge improvement, I should have made this change early this spring. The heavier oil allows me to ride causually standing up whacking ruts and potholes at 20-30 mph, I think they work as good as my KTM dirt bike. Handles better, made the rear suspension feel better as the bike suspension is more balanced. Any way, that's my story for today.
