Strange Kick starter issue
Permalink

Hi there,

I have an oe with a kick starter and usually it all turns over nicely, that being all the time up till 1.5 months ago. Nowadays its 50:50 whether it turns as intended, it almost feels like its maybe forcing the starter motor the wrong way as there is a reallt stramge resistance? Just a really weird feeling. Has anyone else had this issue? Could it be a sprag problem? The sprag was fitted 12 months ago though.

Im just going to stop using it unless i can't use the elec or bump it so it's not cruical at the moment.

It sounds like a sprag issue cry

When a sprag is worn, it can jam on its boss on shut down which leaves the starter engaged.

I have replaced a couple of sprags in the past where it took quite a lot of effort to unjam the sprag to get it off the boss.

TTR starter clutch bits.jpg

The inner part No7 in the picture (green arrow), where the sprag runs on.  It is imperative that this is inspected prior to fitting a new sprag clutch, as if it is worn your sprag will not work properly, even if new.

Hope that helps.

Steve

Thanks, i cant remember it being warn when i fitted it. I'm in Nepal at the moment so not really in a position to check, it needs to last me 700km before its shipped to Australia. Once there if any noise gets more consistent then ill take the gear closest to the starter and run kickstart only....
