I'm building a custom speedo using 7 segment displays, here's a video of the prototype:

Apologies for the poor quality video, the LEDs are actually orange rather than yellow, although I may end up using a red display.

The video just shows a demo counting numbers but the board also has a reed switch attached to it (same as a push bike speedo, or the trailtech speedos) which combined with a magnet on the wheel I'll use to calculate the speed.

I'm considering building a few of these, and maybe one for RPM, maybe a variant using a GPS chip, maybe also a gear indicator. Kind of a modular collection of 7 segment display based instrumentation where you can decide which ones you want to use and how to arrange them. Would anyone here be interested in this kind of thing?

As for why, as much as I like the analogue speedo on my ttr, I think I'll find a digital one much quicker to read. I also quite like the 7 segment display aesthetic.

Prototype now has a power supply and is fully mobile:

 

Next thing to do is put it in a case and stick it on the bike and give it a test ride..

The final thing will be much smaller..

Final thing to do for the prototype is test it on the bike.

Then I'll refine the design and get some PCBs made up.

Hey Steve,

I got to the point of testing this on a push-bike wheel with different types of magnetic sensor but never ended up using it on the bike, perhaps one day!
