Kick start problem 2006 the 250

i have a kick start and its pretty useless , ive tried it a couple of times but defiantly only an emergency back up , its awkward and turns the engine over slow .

i use the electric start and if i stop in the bush stop facing down hill and clutch start it to save using the button . ( reduces the wear on the starter and sprag )

the kick start on nmine is cable tied to keep it out of the way , I have often thought about taking it off but its there just in case .

The TTR kickstart is, in my opinion, not geared correctly and doesn't spin the engine over as fast I would like. I have only ever used it a few times but it ain't easy but, get it right, and she starts right up!

This thread helped me answer the same question. Me estart is easy but I have to kick the living hell out of the Kickstarter to get it going. My dad thinks it might be time to change the splug. I'll see if it helps.

I could never start mine with the kicker when cold, until I had to learn how to start an XR400 customer's bike. Gentle kick round to the compression stroke (where you can feel the most resistance), half a notch further over the "hump" then a full travel kick. Sometimes it works!! Helps to give the throttle a couple of quick twists before the final kick to squirt some extra fuel into the ports.
As Brian says, the gearing is just not quite right.

I too have found the kickstarter pretty useless when it comes to it.I use the electric all the time, wouldn't have a bike without it. Too old for kicking fourstrokes to start them. Twostroke bikes are a whole different ballgame and start no bother. A few of the lads have fourstroke motocross bikes and god nor man wouldn't start them when they go down.

I have taken my kickstarter off and use the e start only. Fingers crossed it always works. The kickstarter kind of sits out a bit far and gets in the way anyway.
If you do need to use the kicker, as Mossproof said, find TDC , push just past that point and then kick, that your best chance.

Something I do use the kick start for is

When parking the bike in the shed turning the motor onto compression so the valves are closed

Might help keep moisture ect out

Here's an update from my last experience. I was kicking like a mad man up to 20 times to get it going. Then my dad said i should clean the air filter and replace the spark plug. Meanwhile I also read about priming the engine before kicking (pull choke out, twist throttle twice, one or two slow kicks to build compression).

So yesterday I chanced the plug, cleaned the filter and just for giggles primed the engine and kicked once. Roaring success! Along with oil shooting from the oil pipe connection i had removed earlier to take the starter out.
