I watch the Dakar every year & 2018 appears the be harder, in fact the hardest I've seen, I only like the solos & the trucks, I know Andy Haydon who got 3rd on his 1st & only Dakar.
IMHO Dakar is the hardest m/cycle event when you look at what they ride in, snow, desert in 40c, they have to use the road book etc.
When I was talking to Andy Haydon last week he said when they got to the rest day & he was in 4th position the KTM team said Ändy we put a new engine in your bike, perhaps a little more power" It had more power & could pull a higher speed in the sand, Andy was given a KTM to ride but without any team support, it was bike only, he had to learn how to use the road book & had the standard box of parts that travelled on a truck, some days the truck would not get in until 11pm or not at all.
Andy might be the only private entry to end up on the podum, anyone that finished a Dakar on a bike is a hero, it's bloody hard
Toby Price looks like he is doing well. Won it first time out, and first time back after he smashed his leg. He is the quickest rider I have ever seen on a dirt bike. Go Toby.

On Toby's 1st Dakar he did the same as Andy & got 3rd, on his 2nd Dakar he won & his 3rd he broke his leg, he is fast but this year he might be riding with his head....perhaps
I think stage 10 he got lost and dropped 50 minutes . Then he won the 11th stage and is 7 minutes behind. Unfortunately for him they cancelled the 12th stage for safety due to rain so he might be running out of time to catch up for another win. Anyway go Toby.
I;ve watched him at Hattah desert race for years, he is always way way faster than everyone else. He has some good go pro u tube videos, his speed is scarey. Especially with his previous broken neck.
Love watching the Dakar every year, just a shame Eurosport don’t adjust the scheduling when the previous programme over runs, so you end up missing half the programme
My little lad came out with a cracker whilst I was catching up on yesterday’s stage this afternoon, he reckons the trucks are ‘Modified Bin Lorries’ I suppose the shape is very similar!
This year does seem to have been the toughest for a while, the early stages in the dunes took a lot of competitors out.
Thanks very much for that link on Lyndon in New Zealand. I didn't realise that he had made it down here.
The South Island is a real Mecca for Adventure Riding and you can see why they chose that and parts of the North Island, to film the "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies. There was obviously some added Computer Imagery but most of the scenery is just lying there. It helped that the Director (Sir Peter Jackson) is a Kiwi !
If anyone out there is into old 'planes, Google Peter Jackson's museum at Omaka as the stuff in there is unbelievable. It is great to see that he spends his "pile of coin" on proper things !
Just watched Lyndon's 18th episode so only one to go, I think.
Cheers and thanks again Brian, you are a font of great knowledge.
