Clutch spring screws

Hello everyone,

I have just about wrapped up overhauling my engine. My final inner engine task is the clutch plates I have just now installed.

 

Here's my issue-

The last time I played with one of these clutches a few years ago, I busted my spare. I put an improper torque wrench to the clutch spring screws and broke one off because I'm a fool 😡

The manual says the clutch spring screws are to be torqued to 8nm (5.8 ft-lb). I have looked around for smaller torque wrenches and had no success. I may check the internet but in the mean time my questions are--

When you torque the clutch spring screws, are they actually screwed in all the way? Or do the springs provide the feedback to achieve proper torque?

Do the washers for said screws sit flush with the pressure plate?

 

I'm hoping I can figure this part out without the use of a torque wrench unless someone wants to tell me that I shouldn't do that.

An interesting question!

8Nm is not a lot but I have found that the bolts bottom out before this figure is reached with the washers tight on the pressure plate.

So what I do is to tighten them up until they bottom out and then just snug them up using an ordinary spanner. Never had one loosen off.

I would be interested to hear what other owners have found and what they do wink

Agreed. Do up 'till they bottom out then just nip them up a bit (not much, the bits they thread into are not strong). This should put the springs at their correct length, and so correct pressure on the plates.
