Just bought a 2003, my first bike. I had no clue what to look for when checking it over. I took it out for an hour and dropped it at low speed a few times. Shut it off quickly, but it left some oil on the ground each time. Looking around, I saw a at the top of the cylinder head is a valve with a hose right next to it that wasn't attached. Following the hose, it attaches to the breather assembly.

Couple of questions:

1.) Is oil leaking from that valve normal? Possibly just excess oil (previous owner had just changed it)?

2.) Should that breather hose be attached? Either from the cylinder head to the breather assembly? Or from the cylinder head to drain somewhere?

Hi MotoNoob_92 and welcome to the forum biggrin

I think you are referring to the crankcase breather pipe that runs from the cam cover on the blue TTRs as indicated in the photo below.

If so, the other end of the breather pipe should be attached to the airbox as per photo below. There should be a spring-type pipe clip at both ends holding it on.

It doesn't have a valve - it's a straight through jobbie. 

The TTR carries a lot of oil in the top of the head so it's very likely you will lose some when it's lying down if the pipe isn't attached.

Just a thought, my 93 one has the lower breather form the crank cases... if I was to blank this off and replace it with a new bluey cam cover and breather do you think there would be less ****ty oil to drain from the emulsifier?

I will do, will be wirth trying as I used to get alot more in my emulsifier than my mates over the same multiple day road sections.

I'll let you know in the far future once the bikes back together
